Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich
The SDK for Android 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich), based on Linux kernel 3.0.1,[56] was publicly released on 19 October 2011.[57] Google's Gabe Cohen stated that Android 4.0 was "theoretically compatible" with any Android 2.3.x device in production at that time.[58] The source code for Android 4.0 became available on 14 November 2011.[59] The update introduced numerous new features, includingRating

Full Article
The Micromax A110
can be safely touted as a phone that received a lot of demand this
quarter. But is the phone worth of the immense amount of hype it has
received.
Build Quality
The phone is essentially a spinoff of
the Galaxy S3 when it comes to build and design. Funnily enough though,
the back plastics seem more robust on the Micromax A110 . The shape and
form factor of the phone are rounded and will be well appreciated by
those who especially enjoyed the looks of the S3. The Camera bezel at
the back sits above the body of the phone making it more prone to
breakage.
Hardware
While looks are one thing, the hardware
is no where like the S3 or S2 for that matter, or any other smartphone
of that grade (I’ll stop mentioning the S3 to prevent trolling below).
The Micromax A110 Canvas 2 features a 1 GHz Dual core Mediatek
Processor, 512 MB of RAM and an 8MP camera. It also has 3 GB + storage
on the inside along with a 5 inch FWVGA screen (do not be overwhelmed by
the moniker it just means a Full Wide Video Graphics Array) that is
hardened to prevent breakage. We wouldnt take the hardening too
seriously , this is no gorilla glass, so a screen protector is
recommended.
The processor may be dual core and may
be clocked at 1GHz, But people really need to understand that sheer
numbers do not mean anything. The dual core processor on the A110 is
quite incapable, in-fact is much lower compared to some single core ones
out there. But that being said, the Micromax A110 Canvas 2 also costs
less than Rs. 10,000 to buy. The RAM in the Canvas 2 is just short of
do-able because it allows you to get things done, but diminishes when
real RAM intensive work needs to get done.
Display and Touch
The display here is one thing that
Micromax should be really proud of. The FWVGA fancy name display is not
the most pixel pounded screen, in-fact the resolution is just enough to
make the 5 incher look good, any thing lower would be termed “trash”.
The IPS panel however puts this in a new league, allowing good daylight
visibility, almost zero darkening on edges and a nice wide viewing
angle.
The colors also pop, but you may want to
download an app to set the color temp, if the phone ever gets rooted.
Because, you will find the display to be over saturated and set at
higher contrast than required.
The display is exceptionally good for
watching Video and playing games. Games however should not want a lot of
finger interaction, because we found that the display tends to only
accept four inputs happily and then jitters on the fifth. Basic usage is
not deterred with this, but may lead to disappointment while playing
certain games.
Camera and Multimedia
The 8 MP camera is much more refined
than the one seen on the A100 (5mp) or the serious blue tinting one on
the A90. The tap to focus works great and the phone now has dual
panorama modes. The simple panorama, which will surprise you with the
quality of seam less stitching of images however the end result may be
blurry if you move fast. The other one is a macro panorama, useful when
possibly taking a picture of some text in a book, you can continue to
take each word of a sentence in a shot to join to make a complete zoomed
up picture of a long sentence. But for the lack of a better example,
the Micromax A110 panoramas are nothing like the one you will see on an
iPhone. Simple because panorama images are shot in low res, so the low
power processor can compile it without crashing.
Multimedia woks great, watch movies or
videos almost seamlessly on this phone. The Micromax A110 canvas 2 plays
back full hd and allows you to scrub through video files while they
play. You will also be easily able to stream content from the internet
and appreciate qualities of a smartphone on this phone. The Audio may
leave something to be desired as its simply not loud enough. The
included earphones, are nothing but ordinary, and you would love to
upgrade to decent quality ones. The inbuilt speaker is barely decent for
watching video, so forget enjoying loud music and loudspeaker calls.
Phone, Messaging and Networks
The earpiece is loud and the mic clear,
we were also happy with the stock dialer in the Micromax A110 Canvas 2,
as it is quite capable. Quick access to contacts and call logs make it
convenient, just like any other Android phone.
Messaging is good and responsive, as at a
max you cannot use more than 4 fingers or even 2 while typing, unless
you put the phone flat on the table. The stock keyboard is easily
replaceable with many available from the Google Play store, to cater to
individual fancies that anyone may have.
The networks are quite stable on both
SIMs, and will not face many issues. With most 3G networks already very
weak its quite difficult to see whether 3G network is weak in the phone
or rom the providers. However, the 3G networks are still as good as any
other phone.
Gaming
A big reason I would get a smartphone is
for the games one can play on it. However, the Micromax A110 Canvas 2
will be a let down for hardcore gamers. With dual core and a large
screen micromax left out one essential element, and that is RAM. While
the GPU is quite capable, the RAM is simply not enough to sustain
performance on the phone. Most heavy games quit on launch and are not
usable. The large game files also only download to the inbuilt memory of
the phone and cannot be transferred to an external storage, so if you
do get that 3 GB full you are more or less stuck.
The phone is not yet root-able, so alternatives may or may not be available to those looking to find ways to make this work.
Battery Life
The phone is also a battery hog, and
really quickly runs out of juice if you are up there on the usage scale.
With whatever gaming you can do, videos, internet, Facebook and Twitter
my phone needed a charge every 14 hours or so. The phone also takes up
to 4 hours to fully charge which is really slow, however using a higher
watt charger, like the iPad’s charger can reduce this time to half (yes
not everyone has an iPad, but the charger can be bought separately if
needed).
Connections Off
- Talk Time 3G network(data off): 4 Hours
- Talk Time 2g (data off) : 5 hours
- Internet : N/A
- Music : 6 Hours
- Video : 3 hours
Conclusion
The phone draws a fine line between
needs and wants, while every customer that Micromax had in the past
begged the company for a dual core phone. The need of a higher amount of
RAM exists, for a more refined experience. The phone also seems uneasy
and is still quite far away from a device that is custom designed from
the ground up. The Micromax A110 Canvas 2, however, offers something
that most companies have not been able to deliver with their phones.
“Higher Specs” go a long way in our country, and the A110 has them, so
one has the ability to say “I own a dual core phone, with a 5 inch
screen”.
Micromax has come a long way from their
first Android A60, and has also shown that they can give the user what
they want. But, its time that companies see what users need more than
want, and a need for a more refined user experience exists. The phone is
an excellent purchase for the price and may be surrounded by
competition soon, if not already. If you have about ten thousand to
spend and an urge to get a big powerful smartphone, the Canvas 2 is as
close to that goal as you can get. But remember high specs are not
everything, especially if not offered in the right mix. Finally, for
those who have not stopped asking, this phone does have WiFi Tethering.
